Judas.

Extremely interesting article about the complications surrounding the publication of the “lost” Gospel of Judas. Or go directly to the National Geographic site where you can actually see the codex and read a translation.

John Banville.

The louder-than-usual grousing after last year’s Man Booker Prize award got me very curious about John Banville, the winner. That Banville’s novel The Sea should not have beaten out one or more of the other short-listed works–Ian McEwan’s Saturday, Kazuo Ishiguro’s Never Let Me Go, and Zadie Smith’s On Beauty among them–seemed a fairly widespread opinion at the time. Or at least a fervently held one. I’ve never read anything by Banville; it appears that some readers or critics don’t care for his somewhat Joycean prose style. So I think I’m going to read The Sea and then clear all this up by posting a succinct appraisal. Right here at UniBrow, in a couple of weeks or so. Just a program note there.

Speaking of book reviews, thanks to stevel for steering us to this drawing and quartering of New York Times book reviewer Michiko Kakutani.
